Brazilian wine

Although many do not consider Brazil a wine country it produces wines you surely heard of. In recent years, Brazil has really grown and has over 1,100 wineries and 30,000 acres of vineyards.

Since the 16^th century, the Brazilians were trying to make fine wines, which was not as easy as they had imagined. Only in the 20^th century they managed to get the production going and Brazil has now become a true wine country.

Wine regions

Rio Grande do Sul, which is located in the south is the most famous Brazilian state the wine comes from. The climate is subtropical with very long summers and short winters, and is most suitable for growing wine.

Another great wine region, which however is not in the south but in the northeast, is Vale do São Francisco. The combination of a dry climate with plenty of sunshine makes for grapes with a high sugar content, which give fruity wine.

Grape varieties

Although sparkling wine is at the moment very typical for Brazil, in recent years the production consists mainly of red wines with a fresh and seductive character and little alcohol. Italian immigrants, who helped launch the viticulture, have taken to Brazil several Italian varietals including Barbera and Trebbiano. Before, only American varietals were planted here. Even today, there is still a large percentage of American grape varieties including Blue Isabella to be also found in the famous sparkling wines.
