Sangiovese

 

Sangiovese is an Italian red grape variety that is particularly well represented in the Chianti appellation. About seventy to eighty per cent of the vineyards are planted with Sangiovese. The grape has a surprising history. It originates from a cross between the Ciliegiolo and Calabrese di Monte Nuovo varieties. The latter does not come from Tuscany, but was born in the hills west of Naples. This is very special because there are only a few vines that have their origin in this volcanic soil. 

 

Sangiovese is particularly sensitive to climatic conditions and soil. What wine ultimately arises is therefore completely dependent on it. Sangiovese wines are supple, aromatic and fruity and often of great quality. The young wines have a lot of fruit, high acidity and a reasonable amount of tannins. If winemaker decides to mature the wine on wood, it gives the juice nuances of caramel, candied fruit and earthiness and smoky tones. Sangiovese is well suited for blended wines. Especially blends with Cabernet Sauvignon, Canaiolo and Mamolo produce very good wines. A typical Sangiovese wine has a spicy aroma of thyme, sweet cherries, violets and fresh sliced tomatoes.
