Lovelli

During our trip through Sicilian vineyards we tasted some 50 Nero d'Avola and selected this lovely soft fruity red wine from Lovelli.

Ancient medieval towers on the coast of Sicily served as watchtowers for early warning of enemy ships. On the southern slopes of the mountains where these towers stand, vineyards were planted. This “hillside vineyards” are ideally positioned to the sun, have good drainage and fresh sea breeze. You taste the result in this lovely soft fruity Nero d'Avola from Lovelli.

Sicily

Winemaking traditions date back to ancient times. The Greeks brought wine to the island and built temples, theatres and cities. After the reign of the Romans various countries and peoples dominated over Sicily for centuries. It became a part of Italy only from the 19th century. It is therefore no surprise that Sicily is one big museum of different cultures coming together.

Because of the heat, it is necessary to irrigate a large number of vineyards. Most vines are planted in the western part of the island in the plains and hills around Trapani. The best vineyards stretch from the north and east of the cool hilly areas. Around Mount Etna the soil is of volcanic nature, the rest of the island has a variety of clay and lime to pure limestone. The northern and eastern parts of the island are cooler and less affected by drought than the rest.
