Portuguese wine
Portugal is a treasury with many varieties no one has ever heard of outside the region. Although Portugal is for centuries a wine country, it is certainly not old fashioned due to an advantage of technical achievements. The wines thus have gained finesse while their authenticity has not been subsided. Portugal has surprising differences in climate, wet and cold in the northern Minho to sunny and warm in the southern Algarve.
Portugal’s greatest asset is the port wine. The wine takes its name from the city of Porto but comes from the Douro Valley. Here you'll find one of the most spectacular scenery in the world of wine, with terrace vineyards on steep granite slopes. In summer it can be burning hot, freezing in winter. The Douro Valley was already defined in 1756 and is the oldest regulated area of origin in the world.
Portugal still has a lot more to offer than just the port. Most Portuguese wines are blends of multiple kinds of grapes. Each region has different mix of dozens of varieties. The most famous wine regions are Vinho Verde, unique wine region with special growth conditions in Douro; Dão, one of the oldest wine regions that mainly produces red wines and is one of the hottest wine regions; Ribatejo and the beautiful island of Madeira where Portuguese settlers started in the 15th century their own vineyards to own as communion wine.
