San Silvano Inzolia

Special Inzolia from Sicily

The Castellani family has been known for putting wines no one has heard much of, in the spotlight. Take the typical Sicilian grape variety Inzolia, which has been planted on the island since the 17th century. Inzolia is, in fact praised by the winemakers as Sicily’s best white variety, thanks to the floral and fruity aromas. If nutty flavours come forward, we have absolutely to do with one of the best Inzolia wines. All of these ingredients are present in this San Silvano, a good opportunity to get acquainted with the best of the best of this special white Italian variety.

A bright straw yellow colour with green nuances. Intense and fresh aroma with pleasant impressions of citrus, grapefruit, peach and almonds. Juicy and fresh in the mouth with a butter soft taste. The long finish is intensely fruity and seductive. A lovely young wine.

Castellani winery

Castellani winery was officially established in Montecalvoli at the end of the 19th century. Winemaker Alfred decided to start bottling and selling his wine, however wine had been produced in the family long before that. Alfredo’s son Duilio helped together with his brother Mario making the wine and the winery was gaining more prominence. The wine was then bottled in typical thatched flasks. Many years later, Duilio’s nephew, Roberto, became a brilliant journalist for the newspaper “Il Giornale del Mattino” published by the company and contributed to the growth of the family business. Today, the Castellani family is still at the helm and keeps producing the finest wines in Italy.

 

Inzolia

Inzolia is a typical Italian white variety and originates from the sunny island of Sicily. Nowadays, you can find a very small plots of this grape in Tuscany too. It is one of the rising stars of Italy, still not very well known but already very loved. Previously, the grape was used only for the Marsala wines, but nowadays it is a good blending partner for many dry wines. For a while, cépage wines were made from the grape. Although it is not an easy variety, more and more winemakers take the challenge. As varietal, the grapes don’t often give very exciting wines. However, if a winemaker succeeds, surprising wines with floral, fruity and nutty aromas can be produced.
