Youthfully fresh green yellow colour. Fruity aroma with pear, peach, green herbs and a pinch of white pepper. Dry and flawless taste with crispy apple, pear, citrus and Reine Claude. Excellent pure mineral Veltliner with body and freshness. Fantastic price/quality ratio!
Hans and Uli Setzer, the winemakers couple behind these Austrian wines were recently awarded “Best Winemaker of the Year”. To celebrate this honourable title they made from the richest clusters of their 2014 harvest a special limited edition Top Cuvée.
Grüner Veltliner is the grape of Austria. There are four major areas for Grüner Veltliner: Weinviertel, northwest of Vienna, and three valleys along the Danube River: Wachau, Kamptal and Kremstal. Weinviertel produces wines of very different qualities, from the absolute top to casual wines for everyday. The soils are quite diverse and the vineyards are on both hilly and flat terrains. Due to especially high yields per hectare, about 100 hectolitres, Grüner (as it is often called in Austria) gives simple, fresh wine without much pretense. Only when the revenues are reduced, richer, full-bodied styles occur. The famous peppery aroma and taste then step forward. That is totally different in the wine regions along the Danube: there the slopes can sometimes be quite steep. The wines here are often determined by the minerality of the soil, sometimes volcanic sandstone, often loess.
DAC or “Districtus Austriae Controllatus” is Austria’s answer to the French appellation system. DAC wines are wines which taste represents a specific Austrian wine region. Weinviertel DAC is the oldest, established in 2002 and Kamptal DAC in 2008. Only Grüner Veltliner may be labelled as Weinviertel DAC. The same for Riesling in Kamptal. Within a DAC there are two quality levels: Klassik and Reserve. The big difference is both the alcohol content and the flavour profile. Reserve wines have in both areas at least 13% alcohol, Klassik wines 12%. The flavour profile of Reserve wines is fuller and richer, and both in Kamptal and Weinviertel aging in oak barrels is allowed, but not required or even common.
